Summer is officially in full swing and weekend trips are the perfect way to celebrate! I love road trips because they are such a great way to spend quality time with the family, no plane ticket required!
I am sharing how to pack for a weekend getaway starting with preparing your car by heading to your local Canadian Tire for a DIY oil change. Have you ever walked down the oil aisle and just stared blankly because there is so many options to choose from and you don’t know which one is best for your car? Me too! I am so glad we learned about the Quaker State® Advanced Durability™ oil just in time for our upcoming weekend road trip to the Okanagan. It’s nice to know they care for your car just as much as you do. I’m all for an oil that gives you more engine life, more performance and more durability with the help of a fuel-saving additive that keeps the oil fresh.
Although I’m not anticipating too much traffic during our road trip (fingers crossed!) I like the feeling of security and protection that comes from an oil that’s been tested in various traffic and weather conditions.
When I pack for a weekend getaway, I usually find myself grabbing my medium sized suitcase. You’d be surprised at how much you can fit in them! On a typical road trip, these are the things I end up bringing with me: (Click here: road trip checklist to download and print this checklist!)
- One item that you can interchange to make three outfits. For example, if I brought a pair of shorts, I can dress them up or down to create various looks.
- Toiletries such as makeup, makeup remover, cleanser, and moisturiser.
- Cash for emergencies
- Jumper cables for the car
- A cooler filled with refreshing drinks
- Car snacks like beef jerky
- Emergency kit for the car
- Underwear
- Two pairs of shoes: one comfy and one for going out
- A dress for going out
- Swimsuit
- Sleepwear
- A good book
- pillows and blankets for quick naps!
- Sun protection: hats are always a good idea since they also protect your hair, and sunscreen
The best part about this checklist? You can find most of these items at your local Canadian Tire. I also picked up this cooler from there to keep our drinks and food cool for the entire trip! Talk about being made for life in Canada!
Ben’s safety tips for changing your oil:
Make sure your car is completely turned off and that there is something holding the tires in place so the car doesn’t move on you. A piece of wood or a jack should do the trick.
Be sure to lay on a comfortable mat while under the car instead of a cardboard. (You can find them at Canadian Tire)

I tend to be an overpacker….and I’m definitely trying to get better! I’ve started narrowing down what I take in my weekender bag, but my laptop is a must! Oh and some snacks. Road trips require snacks!!
This is such a handy checklist for travel! It seems like I’m always forgetting some little detail and a list would really help keep me on track. Best tip of all – making sure you do an oil change before you travel! It’s so easy to forget some of those car related details that are oh so important. #client
It really is! Thanks so much for reading, Cyn! I am so glad you found this list helpful. xx
